MSME Udyam registration.
Udyam registration is a free, self-declared classification that tells lenders, buyers, and government departments what size your business is — and that classification alone unlocks collateral-free loans, protection against delayed payments, and preference in government tenders. It takes minutes to file and costs nothing, which is exactly why there's no good reason for an eligible business to skip it.

Which category you fall into.
| Category | Investment in plant & machinery / equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹1 crore | Up to ₹5 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹50 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹50 crore | Up to ₹250 crore |
Both figures — investment and turnover — are checked, and the higher of the two decides the classification if they point in different directions. Figures are drawn from PAN-linked GST and ITR data, not self-reported estimates.
What classification actually buys you.

What you receive.
Where this sits.
MSME Udyam, answered.
Is this the same as the old Udyog Aadhaar registration?
No, though it replaced it. Udyam registration, effective from July 2020, replaced Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum and the earlier EM-I/EM-II filings, and is now integrated with PAN and GST data rather than relying on self-reported figures alone.
Businesses still holding an old Udyog Aadhaar number need to re-register under Udyam — the old number is no longer recognised for MSME benefits.
Is Udyam registration mandatory?
Not legally mandatory to operate, but effectively necessary to access any MSME benefit — collateral-free loans, delayed payment protection, tender preference, or subsidy schemes all require a valid Udyam number. Many banks and government buyers now ask for it as a matter of course.
Can one person register multiple businesses?
Yes, each business with a distinct GSTIN or PAN can hold its own Udyam registration, but a single PAN cannot be split across multiple enterprises with intent to stay under the classification thresholds artificially. Related-party figures are aggregated for classification purposes.
Do I need GST registration first?
Not always. GST registration is required for Udyam only where the business is otherwise liable to register for GST under GST law. Businesses below the GST threshold or in an exempt category can complete Udyam registration on PAN alone.
Does the registration need renewal?
No renewal is required, but the classification is dynamic — it updates automatically based on PAN-linked GST and income tax data each year, and can shift from micro to small, or small to medium, as turnover and investment change. There is no need to reapply, but it's worth checking the current classification periodically.
Free to register, expensive to skip.
There's no fee and no real downside to Udyam registration if your business qualifies — only benefits left unclaimed for as long as it's delayed.
